Recently, I watched the Top Gun movie from HBO. It brought a lot of memories.
Back then, we had a VHS player which my dad decided to buy because it produced better quality than Beta format. However, most of the households that has VCRs preferred Beta format, thus, the likes of F. E. Lee or Gamil video rental stores have mostly Beta format films. And there was this belief that the first copy from the original would always be the best copy. So I ended up joining my friends in their homes to watch Top Gun or Navy Seals (1990) or any military-themed films.
I knew who Val Kilmer was because I watched his film his film, Top Secret!, with my friends. But I had no idea who Tom Cruise was until Top Gun.
In any case, I can't remember where I watched Top Gun for the first time in the 80s. But definitely I remember watching it in my friend's house a few times. One of my friends even had a Top Gun game (I think it was developed by SEGA) for his Nintendo Family Computer! My friends could easily land the F-14 to the carrier deck. Me? It was always crash and burn every time I tried it.
It was only natural when the Top Gun: Maverick was released in Manila, I decided to watch it on its first day of release (I was in Manila for different reason). The theater was deserted and it was just fine, except for a couple who ate their popcorn noisily.
