| | NIST Develops Yeast Material for Training First Responders on Biothreats Instead of using a dangerous pathogen for training, emergency workers now have the option of using NIST Reference Material 8230, a harmless substance based on baker's yeast. | | | | Ocean Color System Gets a 'Refresh,' Allowing for More Precise and Accurate Measurements Scientists obtain critical information about the global climate by measuring the color of the ocean, and NIST has helped to upgrade an ocean-based sensor that ensures those measurements are accurate. | | Technology That Will Change Our World in 2023 and Beyond: Manufacturing Innovation As we begin 2023, Pravina Raghavan, the director of NIST's Manufacturing Extension Partnership, looks ahead to the most transformative technology emerging in the world of manufacturing. | NIST's Researchers Look Ahead to High-Tech Trends in 2023 and Beyond We asked our senior scientists, "How will the technology you are working on today affect society in the years to come?" Here are their thoughts and predictions. | | |
Chevy Chase Lake Drive in Maryland doesn't offer a water view. But what now is pavement was once an artificial lake used by NIST at the turn of the 20th century. We tell the story on Facebook. | |

For Good Measure Happy 2023! I know I'm mixing holidays somewhat, but I was feeling very thankful earlier this week for the peanut butter standard reference material. During a holiday lunch, a relative of mine was telling a new friend of ours about this unusual-sounding NIST product, and it gave me an opening to talk all about what SRMs are and their many applications. There's a lot to talk about. In addition to the reference material with homeland security applications described in today's issue, and our new video about SRMs, you can also see recent stories, blog posts and web features on reference materials for food allergens, COVID-19 and mpox testing, semiconductors, and DNA ancestry. Our recent feature on standards has a section on SRMs, and we even have an entire feature story devoted to the subject if you want to learn more. We hope you enjoyed this issue, and best wishes for the new year! —Ben P. Stein, Managing Editor |
