Screenshot from video shows a pattern in metal and reads: How does this pattern improve bridge safety?

Researchers at NIST and the Federal Highway Administration painted random patterns of speckles on metal connectors for bridges to better understand how stress and strain could lead to their failure. Find out more about this project on YouTube.

For Good Measure

Today we are commemorating the first day of National Weights and Measures Week, and it's something for everyone to celebrate. As NIST's Katrice Lippa points out in her blog post, inspectors and other people who work in weights and measures make sure we are getting what we pay for at the grocery scale, the gas pump, the hardware store and the seafood market, among other places. And if you find Katrice's blog post interesting, make sure you check out previous Weights & Measures Week blog posts from other NIST staff members: Elizabeth Benham (2021), Tina Butcher (2018) and Diane Lee (2016). We hope you enjoyed the issue!
