This is a question I get asked frequently.
Here's what Alan Aragon has to say about it:
"... protein timing is of distant secondary importance to total daily intake. It's common for folks to fall prey to marketing hype that puts timing on a pedestal, claiming that timing relative to training trumps all. This is false - particularly in the case of protein. Get the cake right first, and then you can apply the icing."
"Flexible Dieting: A Science-Based, Reality-Tested Method for Achieving and Maintaining Your Optima l Physique, Performance & Health" by Alan Aragon
So, what should your total daily intake be?
It depends on your goals, training status, and a few other variables, but, again, according to Alan: 'a minimal range of 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg per day' for the general population, with the recommended range going higher from there for athletes, or those with more specific goals.
