These days I find that there are certain themes around every week of my life. Today's theme is communication and money, two things that affect your life the most.
For every relationship communication is a big factor. If you can't communicate your needs, wants, concerns, you are not going to go far in that relationship. We can feel a little anxious bringing up things that are bothering us sometimes because "What if it just turns into a fight?" or "What if that damages our relationship?"
These concerns are valid. I've lost friends and customers over poor communication on my end and their end. It's one of the risks of being alive. People come and go in our lives and out level of attachment to them determines just how much that can hurt.
Then we add money into the mix. An the potential for hurt goes sky high. In the modern world, getting paid is a necessity, unless you are extremely well off. But this is often not everyone, there's a verse in the Bible about how a poor man looks forward to being paid (Deut. 24:15) which kind of tells us how long this situation has existed.
But back to our focus, the union of communication and money. I've had two money conversations today alone. Both were about me getting paid. One involves a long term client, the other a newer client.
The long term client has been very busy the last few months. It's been hard to get the items I need for my job out of them but they eventually get me what I need. Last month was a mess. They got me what I needed almost at the very end of the month and they haven't paid me (at least while I'm writing this) for the work.
I have no doubt that they will pay me. They've paid me in the past, but I don't know what's going on on their end. So I'm giving them a week or two to figure things out before I "Tap the purse strings". Which is me sending a milestone over Upwork asking for money. To help mitigate this situation, I sent a reminder today about payment and the next things I need for my contract work. It's all about communication.
My other client was messaging me today making sure that my recent project for him was paid. So I spent some time making sure the payment had been made and explaining that it was an automated process. I needed to reassure him that everything was fine and that we were right on track.
Being a business owner, entrepreneur, or whatever it is you do sometimes requires you to keep the peace. And that involves helping people get their butts in gear all the way to assuring people that "It's supposed to make that sound."
It all comes down to the fact that we cannot read each other's minds at all times. So we have to communicate with others, especially about money, in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly.
Was there a time when you wanted to ask something and didn't? How did it turn out?
Think about it.
Sincerely,
The Irreverent Gentleman
