As I mentioned a few weeks ago, food buzzwords are confusing - even to me, a nutrition coach & 25+ year food industry professional! I also promised to breakdown some of the most popular ones. Here’s my #1: ‘Clean’We see it everywhere: ‘eat clean’, ‘clean label’, ‘I only eat clean foods’, etc. Heck, I have at least 20 customers with the word ‘clean’ in the name of their business. Keep this in mind with ‘clean’ - and all buzzwords: More than 1 thing is true about every buzzword.Words like ‘clean’ can be used in many different ways. (This is what makes it confusing.) Consider the context of each case separately. ‘Clean’ in the name or on the label does not automatically mean ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Beware the ‘Clean vs. Dirty Trap’.It’s cool if you want to eat clean all or most of the time. But the trap is that if something is not clean, then it must be dirty. In some cases this can be so stressful and unhealthy that it makes the person sick. I eat clean.With all of the above said, it is possible to have a healthy relationship with food and eating, and for ‘eating clean’ to be one of your personal guidelines. The keys for me are:
To sum it up:If 80% or more of the foods you eat are whole, minimally processed, home-cooked, and properly varied, you will be eating a far more nutritious diet than 80% of Americans. You don’t have to worry too much about the other 20% if your goals are ‘to be healthy’. If you have more advanced goals such as ‘to dunk a basketball’ or ‘have a 6-pack,’ then you’ll need to be in the 90% consistency range with your nutrition plan … … but no one needs to be at 100%.
