I was a ‘straight A’ student in high school, but I began college failing many classes. I struggled to find the motivation to apply myself. Why? One big reason was that I struggled with negative thinking patterns. We Think - A Lot.By some estimates, we may have as many as 40,000 negative thoughts per day. That’s right; as much as 80% of our thinking may be negative. There are good reasons for us to think about some things negatively. It protects us from dangers like starvation or walking into traffic. But we often, take it too far. We Can Change How We ThinkWe can’t stop thinking, but we can change thought patterns. For example, Dr. Martin Seligman, teaches that we all have a dominant explanatory style. A pessimistic explanatory style is characterized by explaining negative events using the three P's:
In contrast, an optimistic explanatory style attributes negative events to external, temporary, and specific factors. With proper practice you can shift from one to the other. Why Does This Matter?Well, in my case, when I was failing at college my thinking sounded like this: “I failed one test; I’m probably going to fail the class, the course, and end up being a failure, so I might as well just not try ...” But when I learned to change that, I realized that: “Failing one test meant that I didn’t study enough, which was something I can correct for the next exam …” It sounds simple & obvious but make no mistake - we can easily get stuck in these very, very powerful thinking patterns across all areas of life. It took me a while, but I did start getting good grades and graduated. Working hard at that kind of ‘cognitive correction’ made my graduation possible.
