Seed oils are not bad. I’ll explain by breaking down this false statement: “Seed oils are bad.” Which ones?Beware of blanket statements. We cannot pour all seed oils into one ‘bucket’. Canola, sunflower, flax, chia, etc. … they may share similar properties, but they’re not the same. Even from one canola oil to the next; one might be biodynamic and cold-pressed; another might be ultra-processed. For who?Quinoa is an awesome food for many people, but every time I eat it, it upsets my digestive system. So quinoa is not good for me. The same is true for seed oils: you may be able to tolerate, or your diet may benefit from, more or less than me. How much?The dose makes the poison. If you consume a modest amount of seed oil along with a balanced mixture of other healthy sources of fat, then, other contributing factors aside, seed oils will not harm you. What are other healthy sources of fat? Fish, nuts, avocados, olives, coconut, lean meats, etc. What context?This is the big one. The statement that “Seed oils are bad” has zero context. But it’s all about the context. Most fast food is cooked in large quantities of seed oil because it’s cheap and difficult to stop eating - especially when that food is also salty, low in nutrient density, and psychologically tempting. You’ll find that people who consume too much seed oil are often consuming far too many calories overall, while eating a diet that’s generally terrible. Also, a morbidly obese person eating the ‘Standard American Diet’ full of fast food, ice cream, chicken wings, and pizza is not likely to have great practices in the other pillars of health outside of diet, namely exercise, sleep, & stress. If you are or know such a person then the removal of seed oils, with no other changes, is not going to save you from a premature heart attack.
