There is no single, universal definition of what makes a food healthy. If you only take one thing away from this post, remember that. If that sounds familiar to ‘there is no one diet for everyone’, perfect. Because there isn’t one perfect diet either. A Multiverse Of ‘Healthy Foods’(You’ll have to excuse me, I’ve been reading a book about quantum physics.) But really, there is a multitude of excellent definitions of ‘healthy food’ out there. Here are 4 examples: Practically speaking, it’s infinite, because you, me, and ChatGPT can sit here and come up with hundreds or thousands of word combinations about this. What Do They Have In Common? Those examples, and others, are generally ‘good’ and well-meaning. They have some biases, which is why you see certain words either used or omitted. But they are attempting to get you to eat foods which will make you live longer & healthier, not shorter & sicker. They’re certainly not universal, because some people, for example, will be healthier eating more animal-based foods, proportionally. You can see how 3 of those definitions discourage that. So, What’s YOUR Definition? Here it is: “Apples are not healthy, apples are apples. ‘Healthy’ is eating the right amount of apples for you.” In framing it this way, I have tried to avoid the trap of universality … … and instead, hopefully, I’ve gotten straight to the point of bio-individuality. What’s good for me is not necessarily good for you … … and what’s good for each of us depends on the dose and the context. Thanks for reading! Click here to get fit inside my free community :) |
