NEW from THE DIRT, February 2026

New Guide on Sustainable Park Operations

|

"The guide is designed for park operators – everyone from mayors to ground crews," said Chris Hardy, ASLA, PLA, senior associate at Sasaki. |

Landscape architects can make the best case for including a park, green street, or green infrastructure system in a development by "putting benefits in economic terms and demonstrating value." And the good news is that developers are increasingly receptive to parks and other green systems because "they recognize the economic upside," said Jill Schmidt Bengochea with HR&A. |

"Landscape architects are unique. We understand how to design and build communities that are practical and give a competitive return on the investment — and provide a quality of life you can't get in suburban places." said Bob Gibbs, FASLA. |

The Los Angeles County communities impacted by the Eaton and Hughes Fires last year need $250 million to restore and rebuild their parks. There are signs of progress: the redesign of Charles White County Park is underway after the community received a $5-million donation from the Walt Disney Company and $5.5 million-allocation from California State Parks. |
