I had one client on a strict plan once who couldn’t understand why they weren’t losing weight. One week went by … no change. Another week went by … no change. Every week we went over the plan and their life in detail, but we couldn’t figure it out. Until, on the next call, they said - nonchalantly - “Well, I have been having small amounts of ice cream, Kit Kats, and Hershey Bars every night.” !!! By the end of the program they ended up making a lot of progress. Physically, yes, but even more so mentally & emotionally. Because the reason they weren’t telling me about the nightly desserts had to do with fear, shame, and perfectionism. What they needed wasn’t really a diet - it was a safe space in which to discuss these things, and some positive ways to reframe them.
