3 Things I've Learned From 20 Years Of Daily Meditation:
(1) It’s essential for building the foundation of a ‘stable’ mind.
Without any practice at all, your mind will happily take over and run the show.
This is not a great place to be, because the mind loves to run wild.
How should you practice? There are many options. Keep reading.
(2) Next, you can begin to observe your thoughts & feelings - in real time.
With some stability established you begin to 'catch' yourself thinking and feeling things much more quickly.
You realize - oh! That's just another thought - I can let it go.
You start to course correct the way you speak and act with others throughout the day.
(3) Last: you can become ‘aware of awareness’ ... this one is slippery!
This is when you 'observe the observer' - you see the true nature of yourself.
It's like peeling back the onion. Sometimes it's a very brief, 2-second glimpse, because the mind is very active.
But once you see it, you can't 'unsee it', and you can live from that state more & more often.
