New appointment and workload systems launch April 25 in just 2 states: SSA's Appointment Scheduling Calendar (ASC) lets people self-schedule initial claims appointments online without calling (current average phone wait is 100+ minutes with callback), and Workload Management system centralizes intake so "someone who applies in California could be speaking to an SSA rep in Maine."
Over a dozen field offices temporarily closed due to staffing shortages: After losing 7,000+ employees last year, some single-employee rural stations have been closed since October with no reopening date — one field office saw walk-in wait times peak at 2 hours and 23 minutes this week, with many people "leaving the office without service."
Union demands $3 billion to hire 20,000+ workers: AFGE Council 220 is calling on Congress to fund hiring of 3,000-5,000 phone reps and up to 20,000 field office workers to eliminate employee reassignments and address backlogs — union also wants telework restored after arbitrator ruled SSA violated collective bargaining agreement (SSA appealed and doesn't have to comply during appeal).

2: Medicare Advantage marketing rules loosened — agents can now use "best" claims without proof |

New rules remove consumer protections starting June 1: CMS relaxed restrictions on superlative language in marketing (allowing "best," "most," "cheapest" without evidence), blurred lines between educational and marketing events, and lets agents delay disclosing which plans they represent instead of in the first 60 seconds — "This absolutely puts profits ahead of people," says Medicare analyst Mary Johnson.
Agents no longer required to tell you about free SHIP counseling: The rule eliminating requirements to inform beneficiaries about State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (free, independent counseling) means you may not learn about local one-on-one help — brokers earn commissions for each Medicare Advantage subscriber they sign up, but get nothing if you choose traditional Medicare.
Changes come as MA growth slows and insurers exit markets: Medicare Advantage enrollment grew only 3.2% in 2026 (down from 7-10% annually between 2017-2024) as insurers exit unprofitable markets due to higher medical expenses — now representing 51% of Medicare's 69.6 million subscribers, with 11,000 Americans turning 65 daily facing these looser marketing rules.

3: 10 signs you should claim Social Security at 62 despite 30% benefit reduction |
 |

Need income now for essentials, debt, or housing costs: If you can't cover rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, healthcare, or high-interest debt without Social Security, waiting may not be realistic — over a third of older households already spend more than 30% of income on housing alone, and claiming at 62 provides immediate cash flow without draining savings.
Health concerns, early retirement, or supporting family: If your life expectancy may be shorter than average, you're retiring in early 60s and stopping work, or you're financially supporting children/grandchildren/relatives, early benefits can replace lost earnings immediately — though this locks in a permanently lower monthly payment.
Critical tradeoff: immediate stability vs. lifetime income: Claiming at 62 reduces your benefit by about 30% for life, while delaying to 70 increases it by 8% per year — if you lack pension/rental income/part-time work and savings fall short (should have 8x annual salary by 60), early claiming provides stability now but costs you long-term security.
