1: GOP bill would eliminate Social Security earnings penalty for workers under full retirement age |

Current rule: earn over $24,480 and lose $1 benefit for every $2 earned: If you claim before full retirement age (66-67) and continue working, SSA reduces benefits once you earn over $24,480 annually ($65,160 in the year you reach FRA, with $1 deducted for every $3 earned) — but you're NOT permanently losing this money, it gets added back when you reach FRA. "Senior Citizens' Freedom to Work Act" would end the penalty: Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC) introduced bills to repeal the "unfair retirement earnings test" — SHRM heavily advocates for this, saying "if you're in that middle income or lower bracket, where losing dollars in the moment will mean the difference between you being able to pay for your medicine or food, then that is a disincentive [to work]." Short-term repeal would strain trust funds: While the retirement earnings test ultimately reduces long-term costs (since people work longer), repealing it would require paying more benefits immediately — this could affect Social Security funding as combined trust funds are projected to run out in 2034, so lawmakers need to weigh popularity against solvency.

3: Fake Social Security emails using official logos and deadlines — here's how to spot the scam |

Red flags: grammar errors, non-.gov sender, and download requests: The scam email says "Security Notice to Active Your Information" (should be "activate"), comes from random addresses instead of .gov domains, and urges you to download a file by a deadline — SSA has made clear they never ask for sensitive information or send software downloads through email. Clicking could install malware, steal credentials, or redirect to fake sites: The "Download Now" button could silently install malware on your device, capture your login information, or send you to a fraudulent website that steals your data — and you might not realize it happened until later. Pause, verify independently, and report to oig.ssa.gov/report: Never click links or download attachments from unexpected emails — instead, go directly to the official SSA website by typing the address yourself, contact the agency through its official phone number to confirm, and report scam emails to the Social Security Administration's Office of Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report.
