1: Latest inflation report shows 2.8% Social Security COLA already falling behind rising costs |

2027 benefit increase projected at 2.8%: The Senior Citizens League estimates the average retired worker check would rise by about $56, from $2,024.77 to $2,081.46 — this matches the 2026 COLA, but advocacy groups argue benefit hikes "often fall short of the actual cost increases seniors are experiencing." Inflation hit 3.3% in March, highest in nearly 2 years: After running at 2.2% in January and February, prices jumped to 3.3% annual pace in March — well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target and already exceeding the projected 2.8% COLA before the full oil shock is reflected in data. Iran war driving gas prices up 38% since conflict began: The national average for regular gas is now $4.12/gallon, up more than 13.6% from a month ago and over 38% since the start of the war — oil price surge was the major driver of March's larger inflation increase.

2: Only 2-Days Left—Need more time to file your taxes? Here's how to get an automatic extension to October 15 |

Extension is easy and automatic — just file Form 4868: The IRS will automatically grant you until October 15th to file if you submit Form 4868 by April 15th (electronically through IRS Free File, by mail with postmark, or have your tax preparer do it) — special extensions available for those outside U.S., military service members, and disaster area residents. Critical catch: you still must pay 90% of taxes owed by April 15: The extension only gives you more time to file, not to pay — you need to estimate what you owe and pay at least 90% by the deadline to avoid penalties, even if you're filing the actual return later. Can't pay? File for extension anyway to cut penalties: If you file for extension, the late payment penalty is only 0.5% per month (plus interest) — but if you don't file for extension, you'll face a 5% per month late filing penalty on top of that, so always file the extension even if you can't pay yet and use the IRS online payment plan tool to arrange installments.

Staffing cuts creating widow benefit nightmares: After DOGE slashed 7,200+ Social Security positions (20% reduction over the past decade), delays in processing survivor benefits are producing "real hardship" — the median retired widow or widower relies on Social Security for 75% of their total income. 77-year-old widow went without checks for 5 months: Forbes senior writer Kelly Phillips Erb's mother lost benefits following her father's death and only got them restored with help from a member of Congress — Erb warns many seniors "have faith in the government to eventually get it right" and would just wait instead of pushing for answers. Don't wait — contact your congressman immediately: If you're not getting answers about missing benefits, "don't be afraid to reach out to a member of Congress," says Erb — "They want to help you, [and] they serve their constituents," and congressional intervention may be the only way to cut through the backlog.
