New cybersecurity bills aim to bolster communication and retain talent

Last week, President Biden signed two new cybersecurity bills into law. One aims to improve communication between state and local governments and CISA, while the other should improve the government's ability to share and retain talent between agencies. Both bills come on the tailwind of other directives by the United States Government to improve cybersecurity and tighten defenses against current and future threats.

NCCoE Opens a New Chapter on Transport Layer Security

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has invited eight technology providers and industry experts to join the Addressing Visibility Challenges with TLS 1.3 project. This latest applied cryptography project will give security and IT professionals the tools they need to gain more visibility into the information being exchanged on their servers. It can also help them fully adopt TLS 1.3 in their private data centers and in hybrid cloud environments.

This project builds upon the NCCoE's previous effort, "TLS Server Certificate Management," which showed organizations how to centrally monitor and manage their TLS certificates.

Introducing the Team

The NCCoE has selected the following group of technology collaborators to join the Addressing Visibility Challenges with TLS 1.3 project team:

  • AppViewX
  • DigiCert
  • Mira Security, Inc
  • NETSCOUT
  • Not For Radio, LLC
  • Nubeva
  • Thales Trusted Cyber Technologies
  • US Bank

These organizations responded to a Federal Register notice and submitted their capabilities for consideration. The accepted collaborators were extended a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, enabling them to take part in the consortium. As the project progresses, they will contribute expertise and hardware or software to help refine a reference design and build example standards-based solutions.

This project will result in a publicly available NIST Cybersecurity Practice Guide in the Special Publication 1800 series—a detailed guide describing the practical steps needed to implement the cybersecurity reference designs.
