Lindsey Graham was once one of Trump's fiercest critics - before becoming one of his most stalwart collaborators. His eventual capitulation is essentially the story of what happened to the Republican Party.
While he spent most of the 2016 campaign excoriating Trump as a toxic demagogue - he began transforming into his chief apologist after the election to seek influence on Trump's foreign policy. However, in order to do this he had to make significant compromises on domestic issues.
After Trump's first year in office the power shifted. Republicans went from humouring Trump to fearing him. Lindsey Graham surrendered to him, and began demonising anyone who opposed him.
Following the 2018 midterms Lindsey Graham moved to a new stage of collaboration with Trump. Graham was no longer just protecting him from accountability, but helping Trump to usurp power.
