From the Oh! By Jingo album - Delmark 210 -made when Clancy was in Chicago in 1964. This is an exceptional band and bearing in mind there was little time for rehearsals their support to Clancy's vocal is superb. Jim Dapogny, later Professor Dapogny, did the arrangements on this Lp.
I will not attempt to tell the Salty Dogs story here but it is one worth checking out, most of their alumni had lifelong careers in Jazz - check out youtube for lots of music and interviews (on swingyoucats) by Kim Cusack.
There is an excellent article on the Salty Dogs by Tom Bartlett with Bob Lord in the Syncopated Times of Feb 26 2021. The band was originally formed in 1947 by students at Purdue University, Indiana. They became famous to the extent that occasionally non Purdue musicians were needed to fill in; the Salty Dogs played the Blue Note in Chicago in 1955.
As for Clancy Hayes performance on this track; he deals with this kind of song like no other vocalist associated with traditional jazz. His upbringing in the small Kansas town of Iola no doubt gave him a feel for songs associated with rural and small town USA. In any case this one is a gem.
