A refugee is "a person who is unable to return his or her country of origin because of a well- founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group." A refugee legally resides in the country of resettlement and is eligible for federally funded cash assistance for up to 8 months. Refugees are resettled in the United States by the federal government and are afforded specific refugee assistance to help them rebuild their lives in America. This federal funding is limited in both duration and amount.
That seems pretty clear and pretty distinct from an illegal/ undocumented immigrant who does not reside in the US legally and is not entitled to assistance.
That does not stop this from being posted on TruthSocial
To the uninformed, refugee and immigrant are synonyms especially when "illegal" is placed before refugees. A refugee is not illegal. Then we have a claim of monthly federal assistance. The assistance is nothing near that and is limited and available only to those who are legally in the US.
And oh yes, not that it matters or is relevant, but the average Social Security check is not $1,200 per month. The average retired workers benefit in 2023 is $1840 per month.
The maximum Social Security benefit in 2023 is $3,627 at full retirement age. It's $4,555 per month if retiring at age 70 and $2,572 if retiring at age 62.
My main concern and hopefully yours are the millions of people who read the above meme and accept it as fact and act accordingly.
