Hurricane Helene has caused wide-spread impacts across the US southeast
Post-landfall updates on hurricane Helene | | | Read all of our Hurricane Helene related coverage Hurricane Helene made landfall on Friday in the Big Bend of Florida, but its impacts have extended far inland over the weekend. The first post-landfall loss estimate to emerge was from CoreLogic, who said private market insured losses from winds and storm surge across Florida and Georgia are initially estimated in a range from $3 billion to $5 billion. Then, Moody's Analytics said the damage price tag from hurricane Helene's impacts on the United States is expected to fall in a range from $20 billion to as high as $34 billion, with property damage a significant component at $15 billion to $26 billion. Gallagher Re's Steve Bowen then said that the broker's initial estimate for hurricane Helene, of up to $6bn, may now be too low, with mid-to-high single-digit billion dollars losses now expected. We reported that the National Flood Insurance Program's reinsurance and cat bonds are now coming in for some focus after the catastrophic extent of flooding further north in US southeastern states becomes clear. Finally, for now, AM Best said it expects a $5bn+ industry loss from hurricane Helene, which brings the reliance on reinsurance of some Florida carriers back into focus.
