The biggest thing I’ve learned from 20 years of meditation is that it’s not about meditation. It’s about mindfulness. Meditation is an activity; a ritual for practicing mindfulness. It’s one of many tools to help you achieve more mindfulness in your life. It’s not the only one. There are others. Practicing meditation regularly can be a great way to achieve more mindfulness. But it’s not a guarantee that you will. It’s possible to meditate for thousands of hours, get really good at sitting still … and still lack mindfulness in relationships. It’s also possible to be quite mindful with no meditation at all. Some can do this more naturally than others. I strongly recommend that you have some sort of daily practice, even if that’s for as little as 1 minute per day, with one stipulation: One of the goals of your meditation practice should be to be able to be more mindful when you’re not meditating. That’s mindfulness - when you are more present in your ‘regular’, daily life. If it doesn’t help you when you’re not meditating, then what good is it?
