Once I lost 9 pounds in 12 days on a crash diet. What’s a crash diet? Any diet on which you eat 800 calories per day or less. This one was 500 calories per day, for up to 40 days. 500 calories per day = starvation. After 12 days, I had to stop & transition to the next phase. Doctor’s Orders?These kinds of diets are also known as ‘VLCD’ or ‘Very Low Calorie Diets’. Sometimes they are juice cleanses, shake-based, extended fasts, pre-packaged foods, or super-rigid meal plans. They should never be done without medical supervision. (If they should be done at all.) The problem with the ‘medical supervision’ thing is that it’s easy to get. Almost all of these programs have doctors overseeing them. But you don’t meet with the doctor regularly, or at all, unless there’s a problem. And you don’t have to ask your primary doctor for permission or for their opinion. A Dirty Laundry ListThere’s not enough room in one email to explain these. Here is list of things that can happen as a result of crash dieting:
Serious stuff. Now, back to my story. I had to stop the VLCD because I was losing weight (fat & muscle) too fast. I didn’t even need to lose weight to begin with. I started the diet because I wanted to learn it and coach it. I did; I learned a lot, and helped a lot of people. I spent most of my time helping clients make sure they avoided the problems above as best I could. But sometimes those issues did come into play. I’ll never coach a crash diet program again. The tradeoff of long-term risks is not worth the short-term reward of rapid weight loss. I believe that 90% of people who want to lose weight can do so quite quickly without those risks.
