If you sit still and pay attention, there are thousands of sensations going on at any given moment. The sounds of birds chirping, cars passing, refrigerators humming, of your breath, of the house creaking, and so on. The physical feelings of the chair or floor beneath you; of the muscles in your back, neck, arms, legs, and so on making micro adjustments; of heat, cold, and more. The sight of all of the objects in your field of view, and the striking details you can zoom in or out of each, or even the light and color you see with eyes closed. Last but not least, thoughts, continually arising and slipping away. Should we feel overwhelmed by all of this? Life does feel that way sometimes. However, after almost 20 years of daily meditation, I can tell you that the practice of paying attention for a few minutes absolutely helps you feel less overwhelmed when you’re not meditating.
