John was a salesman who traveled 2 weeks every month for work, taking trips all over the country by car and plane. Every time he returned home he found that he had gained at least 5 pounds from all of the wining, dining, and grab & go foods, which nullified the good effort he put into his nutrition while at home. Until one day I pointed out that he didn’t need to cook while he was on the road in order to maintain his weight. Once we dispelled this myth, his mind opened to what was possible. He began grocery shopping upon arrivals to stock up on healthy snacks; he learned which key dishes & ingredients to modify at restaurants; he adopted a flexible strategy that allowed a reasonable about of late night food or alcohol. After 2 or 3 work trips practicing these habits and others, they became skills he could rely on anywhere, anytime. And ever since we’ve worked together, he’s done great managing his weight even while traveling. I know this because I check in with him often … and he doesn’t need my help any more.
