What to Know for Wednesday, April 29, 2026: |
1: Trump administration proposes slashing SSI benefits for 400,000 disabled adults living with families on SNAP |

Up to $330/month cut for living at home with poor relatives: The proposed rule would deduct the value of a disabled adult's bedroom from their SSI allotment if family members receive food stamps — cutting benefits by up to a third or ending support entirely for people with Down syndrome, dementia, severe autism, and other disabilities living with low-income families.
Undoes Biden policy recognizing families already proven poor: The rule reverses a 2024 Biden policy that said if SNAP already determined a family is poor enough for food stamps (typical household supporting SSI recipient earns just $17,000/year), they don't need to re-prove poverty — now families must file extensive monthly reports on property, income, assets, bills, and household changes.
Costs taxpayers more, increases bureaucracy despite "efficiency" claims: Cutting Burton's SSI by $11/day could force her into residential facilities costing "hundreds of dollars a day or more" — SSI already accounts for 35% of Social Security Administration's administrative budget despite distributing just 5% of benefits, and this rule adds more paperwork after DOGE pushed out 7,000 SSA employees.

2: Humana kept Medicare Advantage members while competitors fled — Wednesday's earnings reveal if your benefits are safe |

Rising medical costs could mean higher premiums or fewer benefits: Humana is spending more to cover members' healthcare (medical costs up to 89.7% from 87% last year) — while the insurer grew its membership as competitors exited markets and trimmed benefits, the question is whether they can afford to keep covering you at current levels or will need to raise your premiums or cut perks next year.
Government payment increase may protect your benefits: After the feds initially proposed a nearly flat payment rate for 2027 (which would have forced benefit cuts), they finalized a 2.48% average payment increase in early April — this extra money could help Humana avoid slashing your dental, vision, or gym benefits like other insurers did.
Your plan's future depends on how much healthcare you use: If Humana members are using more medical services than expected (more doctor visits, tests, procedures), the company may need to raise your costs or reduce coverage to stay profitable — analysts say Wednesday's earnings will show whether seniors on Humana plans are heading for benefit cuts or if the higher government payments will be enough to keep your coverage stable.

3: Senior workforce exploded 52% in past decade — GOP bill would eliminate earnings penalty and help pay off mortgages in retirement |
 |

More seniors working past 65 than ever before: The number of working seniors aged 65+ has surged 52% over the past decade (vs. 33% general population growth), with 21% of seniors in the Northeast still working — states like New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Maryland see the highest increases as rising housing costs force retirees to delay leaving the workforce.
Housing expenses keeping seniors on the job: Rising insurance premiums, property taxes, and maintenance costs are putting "immense pressure on older homeowners to remain in the job market longer" — many feel forced to delay retirement to afford staying in their homes, even after becoming eligible for Social Security.
GOP bill would let working seniors keep full benefits: The Senior Citizens' Freedom to Work Act (introduced by Sen. Rick Scott and Rep. Greg Murphy) would repeal the retirement earnings test — currently, earning over $24,480 before full retirement age triggers $1 benefit reduction for every $2 earned above the cap, but the bill would let seniors keep their entire Social Security check regardless of work income.
Would help seniors pay mortgages and housing costs: With extra funds no longer withheld, seniors could more easily pay off mortgages, insurance premiums, and property taxes that have seen dramatic increases — especially critical as states in the Northeast like New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Maryland see highest increases of seniors in workforce.
