Phone wait times 10x higher after 7,000 employees laid off: Senator Elizabeth Warren's "Social Security War Room" investigation found actual wait times were more than 10 times higher than what SSA claimed on its website — some rural field offices "have reportedly been left with such limited capacity that [they] are effectively closed," unable to provide in-person services millions rely on. DOGE's fraud claims debunked by SSA's own data: Elon Musk claimed 40% of calls to change direct deposit information were fraudulent and that dead people were receiving benefits — but Social Security Administration data found only 2 cases of fraud out of 110,000 new claims made over the phone. Commissioner Bisignano "Googled the position" when offered job: Trump appointed investment banker Frank Bisignano as SSA head in October, who admitted he had to Google search the position — he initially planned to limit disability benefits and raise retirement age but scrapped plans after backlash, while SSA spokesperson rejected Warren's claims citing "significant customer service improvements."

2: Medicare to cover breakthrough medical devices within 60-90 days instead of a year or more |

New RAPID pathway cuts reimbursement timeline by 90%: CMS and FDA announced a program to align regulatory review and Medicare coverage decisions for certain breakthrough devices — coverage decisions will come within 60-90 days of FDA approval instead of a year or longer, with CMS issuing a proposed national coverage decision on the same day an eligible device receives FDA approval. About 40 devices initially eligible including heart valves and implants: Class II and Class III breakthrough devices qualify, including artificial heart valves, devices that treat heart rhythms, and implants that stimulate nerves to treat diseases — regulators say this will "demystify the process by providing a clear signal to device manufacturers of exactly what targets they need to hit." Big win for Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson: Large device makers who lobbied lawmakers for faster Medicare coverage stand to benefit — Medtronic generated $33.5 billion in 2025 revenue and J&J generated $33.8 billion in medtech sales, and both companies have argued lack of clear reimbursement pathway "discourages innovation and investment."

Retirees underreport other income by huge margins: When Census Bureau researchers matched survey responses to IRS tax records, they found retirees failed to report 401(k) and IRA withdrawals 46% of the time — the corrected figure shows only 14% of Americans 65+ rely on Social Security for 90%+ of income, far below the 24-39% surveys claim. Most retirees have multiple income streams they forget about: 45% of retirees draw from 401(k)s/403(b)s/IRAs, 49% have other savings and investments, 40% receive pensions, and 15% tap home equity — when these streams go underreported, Social Security appears to loom larger than it actually does. Reliance on SS doubles as you age, women hit hardest: Congressional Research Service analysis shows dependence on Social Security doubling from ages 65-69 to those 80 and older — and in every age group, women rely far more on Social Security than men do.
