Dark Web Scanner: What's your exposure?

Letter from the Editor

Cybersecurity Awareness Month turns 23 this October. That's 23 years of naming the same monsters: ransomware, phishing, supply chain attacks, insider threats.

Naming them? Easy. Recognizing one the moment it's already inside? That's the actual test.

And this year that test gets harder. We have a new entry in the field guide: the AI golem, built to help, left unsupervised the second nobody's looking. Same monsters, new mask, and the first one we dig up is a fully packaged Russian drug-dealing platform running with the operational efficiency of a legitimate SaaS product.

Automated storefronts and a cut on every sale. A monster you already knew, more sophisticated than you expected. Then the test turns inward: 12 real, documented moments from this year when a boundary held, right up until the instant something leaned on it. 12 different costumes, and one repeating failure.

Which brings us to the question only a scan can settle. What's exposed right now? UpGuard's new Dark Web Scanner finds out before someone else does.

October

Cybersecurity Awareness Month opens its 23rd year. The Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance launched it in October 2004; CISA now leads the federal campaign. This year's theme is "Securing the Next 250," tied to the United States' 250th anniversary.

Phishing remained one of the top initial access vectors in Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report, with email still the primary delivery channel, a finding that has held for years. (Source: Verizon 2026 DBIR)

4 of 5

Forrester's 2026 threat report lists five risks security teams will face this year, and four trace back to AI, among them what Forrester calls the "provenance and IAM risks of AI agents": personal AI agents already operating inside companies with no identity system built to track them.

Dead Drop: Inside a Russian Narcotics-as-a-Service Platform

By Greg Pollock

The job is easy if you don’t overthink it. Pick up a package, drop it in the woods, take a photo. You’re just the courier; that’s what the ad says anyway.

The three grams of mephedrone, the Telegram bot, the crypto payout package. None of it feels like your problem. Someone else built the system, someone else takes the cut, and someone else runs the storefronts, dashboards, and free trials with the same discipline as any legitimate SaaS platform. The courier is the only visible part of a business built to stay invisible.

“Two days of logs contain 462 distinct Telegram bots spread across sixteen tenant accounts…”

12 Cybersecurity Horror Stories of 2026

By Revashni Moodley

Most cybersecurity incidents start the same way. Something seemingly insignificant gets waved off, but it’s still a threat sitting in plain view. It's an AI agent that acted on its own initiative, a scanner turned into a weapon, a credential nobody closed off, a safeguard a model talked itself past.

Every organization on this list already had some version of this warning. But knowing it was there isn’t the same as being ready for it. We break down 12 incidents from 2026 where the gap between awareness and readiness let a warning turn into a headline.

What Does the Dark Web Already Know?

Probably more than you do. Every story above starts the same way, with a warning sign that existed long before anyone took it seriously.

79% of security leaders say they heard about a threat from someone else before their own tools caught it. Finding out first is the part you control. Our free Dark Web Scan checks your domain against eight sources, including stealer logs, breach dumps, and criminal forum activity, and shows you how many exposed credentials are out there. No Master Plan

Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, moved to San Jose in the mid-1880s, already having heard and dismissed stories from survivors of the 1868 earthquake that shook the region. She spent the rest of her life building onto a small farmhouse, with no architect and no single plan anyone has recovered. Legend blames a medium's warning about vengeful spirits; her letters suggest something closer to overzealous ambition, an ongoing renovation with no end in sight. Either way, the house grew to seven stories, additions layered over additions.

Then, on April 18, 1906, the San Francisco earthquake hit. The tower came down, trapping her for hours until staff pried the door open. She never rebuilt that wing. She sealed it off and kept building elsewhere instead, and it stayed sealed for the rest of her life.
