Alan Watts said that 'the easiest way to get into the meditative state is to '𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛.'
But for most of us, that's easier said than done.
Because to 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛 means to 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒.
And these days, we are constantly tempted to keep doing and doing and doing.
We have long, infinitely growing To-Do Lists.
We have feeds filled with addicting distractions.
We have bills to pay and families to take care of.
We have to keep 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 more to stay ahead of things, right?
Well, no, in fact that's wrong.
Doing 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 is the key to doing more.
More quality, that is.
And one of the best ways to quiet the noise and actually hear what's important is to practice ... ... listening.
Here's the thing about Sounds:
Sounds, whether external or internal, are a bit like ocean waves.
They will never stop flowing.
They come and go, in and out of our perception, at their pace - not ours.
We cannot control what sounds are happening.
Thus, forcing yourself to stop, even if just for a few minutes, and listen to the sounds around you - without 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 anything about them - is great practice.
You'll quickly find that all sounds recede ... even repetitive thoughts, if you sit long enough.
So, what happens when you get better at listening to sounds?
You improve your perception of reality, you raise your awareness, and you become better at distinguishing the signal from the noise.
That and, your taking good mental care of yourself with a healthy daily pause.
Give it a try.
You don't have to 𝑑𝑜 anything ... except 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛.
