I quit today. (Not my job!) I quit in the middle of my sprint training. I almost never do this. I can’t remember the last time I did. A bit of self-grace: it was the hardest of 5 sprint workouts that I do regularly. While my legs and lungs were a bit tired, that wasn’t the reason I stopped. I stopped running because I allowed too much negative chatter in. There’s always some negative chatter. But typically I balance that with an approrpriate amount of positive chatter. For example, I’ll tell myself before I being that ‘I am going to complete this no matter what’. While I’m running, when negative chatter starts to creep in, I’ll remind myself of WHY I’m doing this in the first place. (My go-to is usually ‘for my heart’ which means my long-term health, so I can be strong and fit for my childrens’ children and beyond.) But today I didn’t do enough positive self-talk. I didn’t set a clear intention prior to beginning. In fact, if I’m being honest, I thought about quitting before I began. I thought about the thing I had to do right after and what time it was. I thought about ‘how I’m already in great shape’ - which is a very tricky way for The Resistance to coax me into ‘taking it easy’. And that was enough. As soon as I stopped I started walking back to the start line and reflected on this. Then I picked it up to a jog. Then I finised the session off with some shorter sprints ... ... and a committment to redo that same workout next week in full. No matter what. In my experience, 90% of the time things like this come down to our mindset. Do you agree? ⚡ Coach Matt Men’s Group • LinkedIn • Instagram • X
