Yesterday for Halloween I served the children in our neighborhood individual, sample-sized cups of organic, biodynamic sauerkraut grown & fermented on a local farm. Keep reading until the end and I’ll tell you how they liked it! The Perfect Halloween Food?Hawthorne Valley Farm is biodynamic & regenerative, an even higher standard than organic. Their food is as nutritious and as good for the planet as possible. Since it’s within driving distance, it’s a highly sustainable option, second only to walking or having my own farm. I used bio-degradable serving cups & forks, of course. Sauerkraut is a fermented, ‘live’ food, usually made from cabbage, but can be from other vegetables. Fermented foods are excellent for your gut & digestive system. Vegetables are high in fiber, and estimates are that 90% of people do not eat enough fiber, which helps with satiety, digestion, gut health, and caloric balance. Since most children would both be eating lots of candy and don’t get enough fiber, it was the perfect opportunity to improve the health of my neighborhood. But, did the kids like it?I’m kidding. We served them regular, conventional candy & snacks. All of the stuff that I personally don’t eat, but which I do allow my own children to eat occasionally, especially on occasions, which Halloween is. As a parent, I’ve always felt that being too restrictive with junk food would backfire, so I allowed it. I always told my kids how I felt about it. I sometimes intervene if I saw them eating too much. But I never told them that they could never have it. For most people, if you’re going to pick one day to eat junk food, Halloween is perfect.
