- Japan quake: ILS managers see minimal loss potential. Euler estimates $3bn-4.5bn insured
After last week’s magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Kumamoto prefecture of Japan a number of specialist insurance-linked securities investment managers have commented, with all analysis seen so far indicating this is currently viewed as unlikely to be a loss event of particular note for the catastrophe bond and ILS market.

Catastrophe bond funds in the UCITS format have now added more than $1.84 billion of assets through 2026 so far, with the sector surpassing the $21 billion milestone for the first time last month.

The secondary market for catastrophe bonds remained bid-heavy during the opening half of 2026, as an influx of market participants looked to buy bonds rather than sell out of their existing positions, which caused for secondary market activity to see a meaningful increase during the period following a relatively subdued 2025, according to Swiss Re Capital Markets.

Chubb has been buying more reinsurance this year as it sees an opportunity to “feed the hungry” in the competitive and softened market environment, CEO Evan Greenberg said today. He also made some interesting commentary on softening expanding into casualty lines and rate failing to keep up with loss costs, in his view.
- Asian Development Bank discussing Risk-Layered disaster risk transfer with Mongolia
The Asian Development Bank is working with Mongolia on the potential to replicate the Risk-Layered Disaster Relief Finance Program it recently implemented for the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, which puts sovereign parametric risk transfer instruments including catastrophe bonds as part of the conversation.
- Verisk acquires McKenzie Intelligence Services to boost cat event preparation and response
Verisk, the data analytics and technology provider, has acquired McKenzie Intelligence Services (MIS), a geospatial intelligence and event response company that specialises in global real-time catastrophe and conflict event analysis.
- Arch promotes Lynch to Head of ILS Experience and Operations
Arch Capital Group, the Bermuda headquartered insurance and reinsurance specialist, has promoted insurance-linked securities and retrocession operations specialist Bryan Lynch to the role of Head of ILS Experience and Operations.
- US Midwest SCS, wind, hail & tornadoes may rank as a top-10 severe weather loss: Aon
A substantial severe weather outbreak in the Midwest of the United States last week is seen as having the potential to result in a top-10 severe weather insurance industry loss event, which would imply the cost could be around $5 billion or higher to the market, according to broker Aon.
- Japan quake impact on cat bonds, private ILS not expected to be material: Twelve Securis
Twelve Securis has reported that it does not expect any significant loss impact to the cat bond market from yesterday’s Kumamoto, Japan earthquake, while an assessment of its private ILS positions also does not suggest any material impact.
